1080p, 2K and 4K download guide

Resolution describes the number of image pixels, not overall quality by itself. A clean 1080p source can look better than a heavily compressed 4K upload. Choose the smallest option that preserves the detail you need and fits your connection and device.

What the quality labels mean

Label Typical height Practical use
360p 360 pixels Small screens and limited data.
720p 720 pixels Phones, tablets and compact files.
1080p 1080 pixels Desktop and Full HD displays.
2K / 1440p 1440 pixels Large monitors and detailed footage.
4K / 2160p 2160 pixels 4K displays and source-preserving archives.

Why high quality takes longer

YouTube commonly offers 1080p, 2K and 4K video separately from audio. The service automatically prepares one playable MP4 with sound while the preparation page remains open. A 360p or 720p option may already include audio and can start much sooner.

How large will the file be?

Size depends on duration, frame rate, codec, motion and bitrate. The buttons show an estimate before download; it is more useful than a universal MB-per-minute promise. A 60 fps HDR 4K upload can be many times larger than a simple 30 fps 1080p clip of the same length. The service rejects a prepared result above 1.5 GB.

Choosing the right option

  • For a phone, start with 720p or 1080p.
  • For a Full HD display, 1080p normally preserves the screen resolution.
  • Choose 2K or 4K only when the original provides it and you need the extra pixels.
  • Use MP3 when you need only speech or music and are allowed to save it.

Open the YouTube downloader, paste one public video and compare the actual options shown for that upload.
